Virgin Galactic and Adidas‘ Y-3 collaborate to design a new comfortable suit for space
A spaceflight company Virgin Galactic and Adidas‘ label Y-3 have collaborated to design a new comfortable suit for space.
Virgin Galactic is a private spaceflight company that belongs to Richard Branson’s Virgin Group. It has been focusing on bringing space tourism to consumers. The company is creating the prototypes of the new spacewear that will be used by pilots. A much admired Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto will also join the partnership.
The company mentioned that it has used materials like Nomex for creating the prototypes. This type of material is made up of strong, heat-resistant synthetic fibers, and is alike Kelvar, which is used in the creation of bullet-proof vests, however it is also more flexible.
The designing of the suits will be done in a way to support a pilot in sitting position while on long flights, allowing the pilot to be at ease. The team is optimistic to make suits less huge and more practical while performing space tasks.
Adam Wells, Head of Design at Virgin Galactic, commented, “Our evolution into fully-functioning spaceline presents unprecedented opportunities to create original designs in support of our unique customer experience. Together with incredibly talented team at Y-3, we will explore potential to create innovative apparel and accessories – both for staff and for pioneering customers”.
He mentioned that the latest spacesuit is suitably functional and fit for purpose. It has been crafted thoughtfully and elegantly, and is fun and fulfilling to wear and use.
According to a statement issued by the two companies, the apparel will be put on trial by the astronauts during Virgin Galactic’s flight test program for ensuring that the suits are practical to wear and carry while driving a commercial space flight.
