Video shows Boston Dynamics upgraded Atlas Robot that can handle pushing and bullying

A video featuring a new version of Boston Dynamics’ Atlas robot suggests the machine is going to be a game changer, not just for the robotics company but for society. How?

Waltham-headquartered Boston Dynamics released a video showcasing its upgraded Atlas robot, which can be seen walking outside the company. The company has given a sleeker design to the bot. In the beginning of the footage, the robot can be seen stepping outside of the company’s office. After that, Atlas walks on snowy and uneven surfaces and is also seen walking around trees.

The company has posted the video on video-sharing website YouTube. In the description, Boston Dynamics wrote that the upgraded robot is able to operate outside office environment and inside public buildings. “It is specialized for mobile manipulation. It is electrically powered and hydraulically actuated. It uses sensors in its body and legs to balance and LIDAR and stereo sensors in its head to avoid obstacles, assess the terrain, help with navigation and manipulate objects”, the description read.

To test the robot, a man pushes it off balance with a hockey stick. Atlas stumbles backwards, but within a short while, it regains its balance. After that, the person pushes the robot down from behind. This time, the robot pushes itself up without human’s assistance.

Some YouTube users were not happy the way the human pushes Atlas in the video. Many of them said they felt sorry for the machine, while some call the man a bully.

It wasn’t the first time when Boston Dynamics has upgraded the Atlas robot. Last summer, the company presented a new version of the robot for the DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals. That time, Boston Dynamics team faced a challenge to make changes in power supply and hydraulic pump of the robot.
