Video Captures Moment of Thousands of Blacktip Sharks appearing off Florida Coast
Tens of thousands blacktip sharks have been captured in a stunning video while roaming off Florida coast. According to experts, the species of requiem shark must have reached off Palm Beach in search of food or warmer water in winter.
They were so huge in numbers that if someone threw a stone from the shoreline, it would definitely hit a shark, said Dr. Stephen Kajiura from Florida Atlantic University’s shark lab. The sharks’ presence was providing a rare and stuffing view to beachgoers, but it wasn’t pleasing since blacktip sharks are famous for their aggressive behavior. But no casualty or fatal attack has been reported this seasonal migration so far.
“Even though we have this huge number of sharks, we have relatively few bits. When you consider the number of people in the water and the number of sharks in the water you’d think there would be a lot of interaction”, explained biological sciences professor Kajiura.
The 5 feet tall Blacktips are given this name due to the black markings on the tips of their fins. The shark, commonly found in tropical and subtropical worldwide, depends on squids, fish and stingrays for food. The species, during winters, shifts its location in search of warmer water.
The first blacktip shark of this migration season was seen around Miami Beach last month. Since then, many people have reported that they saw herd of sharks in the area of the ocean. This migration can be an opportunity for shark researchers to understand the species in details.
Kajiura, who studies the shark and its migration patterns, captured the stunning video after waiting many days for the blacktips to make an appearance. It was one of the greatest experiences, according to Kajiura.
