US Launches Investigation Into ‘Friendly Fire’ British Deaths
Washington: The United States enounced it would carry on a methodical investigation with Britain into the situation under which three British NATO military personnel were killed in a friendly fire event in Afghanistan.
Kurt Volker, the principal deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs said, “The United States is deeply saddened by the death of three British soldiers in Afghanistan and the wounding of two others in a friendly fire incident involving ordinance dropped by a US aircraft.”
“We will investigate this tragic incident thoroughly with our British allies," he said. "We are committed to making information available as quickly as possible,” Mr. Volker added.
US planes allegedly dropped a bomb on the troops in fighting with Taliban activists.
The Defense Ministry in London stated that the happening, near Kajaki in southern Helmand province, occurred late Thursday when two US military planes were called up to provide accompaniment after an attack by the Taliban rebels.
The deaths are expected to actuate annoyance in Britain. Both the British army and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) established prompt investigations into the latest deaths.
“We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the soldiers who died, and we wish those who were injured a speedy recovery,” Volker said.
