US businesses launch alliance to pressurize India to change policies
A group of major US businesses and advocacy groups on Tuesday announced the launch of a new alliance to pressurize India to change policies that allegedly hurt US exports, jobs and innovation.
The Alliance for Fair Trade with India (AFTI), which was launched in Washington, is co-chaired by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and the Global Intellectual Property Centre (GIPC), which wants the Obama administration to pressurize India to put an end to "discriminatory" economic policies to protect US manufacturers' competitiveness and jobs.
Linda Dempsey, vice president for International Economic Affairs at NAM, alleged that Indian policymakers introduced a series of policies to force local production of a broad range of manufactured goods that hurt US imports.
GIPC executive vice president Mark Elliot accused India of failing to respect global intellectual property standards.
Speaking on the topic, Elliot added, "From unprecedented patent revocations and denials to insufficient copyright enforcement, India has established itself as an outlier in the global economy."
The Alliance has been launched ahead of US Secretary of State John Kerry's India visit for the fourth India-US Strategic Dialogue.
