Unsecured Wi-Fi connections to be spotted by Mumbai Police

Unsecured Wi-Fi connections to be spotted by Mumbai Police With the aim to find unsecured Wi-Fi connections, Mumbai Police would soon be covering the streets with laptops in their hands.

It seems as a necessary initiative taken up by the Mumbai Police as there were many incidents of unexpected blasts and terror attacks and suspects using Wi-Fi internet for communication. The Policemen would be required to cover several areas and locations in the city, in the search of unsecured Wi-Fi connections.

DCP Sanjay Mohite reported, "If a particular place's Wi-Fi is not password protected or secured then the policemen at the spot has the authority to issue notice to the owner of the Wi-Fi connection directing him to secure the connection."

It has been learnt that the Police would be issuing the notice under section 149 of the Criminal Procedure Code which is meant for preventing the commission of a cognizable offence.

This unique and vital step was taken on Friday at a conference, where nearly 80 police personnel were present to learn about Wi-Fi connections and cyber crime.

It has been learnt that before the Delhi and Ahmedabad blasts took place, terror mails were sent via the unsecured Wi-Fi connections. Furthermore, it has also been found that a Wi-Fi connection at residence of US national Kenneth Heywood in Navi Mumbai was user to send terror mail prior to the Ahmedabad blasts. The mail sent prior to the Delhi blast was traced to a residence in suburban Chembur. It should also be noted here that the Wi-Fi connections which were used to send the terror mails, were both insecure.
