Two-year-olds most frequently injured in Tricycle accidents

A new study has found that tricycles send thousands of kids to emergency rooms every year and they are even responsible for some deaths as well. Most of the accidents take place when children are two years old.

The research published in the journal Pediatrics has found that the most common injury place due to tricycles is on head. Most of kids showing up at the emergency rooms had cuts and some had internal damage.

Study researchers said that most deaths take place when children on tricycles fell into swimming pools when they are riding it unsupervised. Therefore, it is very important for parents to keep a tab on their children if they have tricycles.

Study’s lead researcher Sean Bandzar from the Medical College of Georgia, was of the view, “The environment in which children ride their tricycles should be free of pathways leading to sources of water. In addition, parents should supervise all children riding tricycles”.

The researchers have affirmed that tricycle injuries take place on rare basis. But in most years, they are the second-most common cause of toy-related deaths in America and was the most common cause in 2012.

Lacerations were the most common injury type in the ER and made up 2,637 of all injuries seen. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has reported that there were 256,700 emergency room visits related to injuries in 2013 and 96% of children injured are treated and released.
