Twelve dead in mudslide in Guatemala

Twelve dead in mudslide in GuatemalaGuatemala City  - Twelve people were killed in an avalanche of mud and boulders in the town of La Union, 140 kilometres east of the capital, officials confirmed Monday.

The mudslide on Sunday was triggered by days of heavy rain in the Central American country.

The mayor of La Union urged rescue units to evacuate the entire village of 25,000 people as a precautionary measure. But access to the town was blocked by a series of avalanches.

Since the rainy season began in late May, 60 people have died in weather-related accidents. (dpa)
