Truckers call off eight-day strike unconditionally

Truckers call off eight-day strike unconditionallyAll India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has called off eight day long transporters strike on Monday. The transport strike crippled the entire nation with adverse impact on supply of essential commodities and services. Some states had also imposed Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) on striking transporters to deal with the situation.

Meanwhile, Transporters started normal services unconditionally following verbal assurance by Union Government to consider their demands. Union Transport minister, TR Baalu said, "The transporters have agreed to call-off their strike unconditionally. A redressal grievance mechanism will be set up under transport secretary, Brahm Dutt. The committee will have members from AIMTC and state governments. It will submit its report in eight weeks."

Meanwhile, the arrested AIMTC president Charan Singh and 31 other associates were released following unconditional strike call off. Former president of AIMTC, Gurinder Pal Singh said, "On the issues relating to service tax notices, reduction in prices of tyres, rationalisation of taxes, AIMTC would submit a detailed report to the ministry who would, in turn, take up the matter with the concerned ministries and departments."

Sources believe that government's tough stand toward oil officer strike and rift between transporters forced them to call off strike.
