TRAI for customer friendly measures in TV service

Telecom Regulatory Authority of IndiaThe Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has recommended many measures to ensure quality cable and DTH service to the customers. Service providers have to pay for delay in connections, poor service and service interruption, if the recommendations are implemented by the government. The recommendations are aimed to improve the quality of service (QOS) in non-CAS areas and Direct-to-Home TV service. The regulator has issued a consultation paper and demanded views of the stakeholders by December 31, 2008. It has demanded view on proper procedures and timelines for connection, disconnection and transfer of cable connection. The body is also in favor of proper procedures for billing and effective mechanism for complaint handling.

The regulator said in a press release, "As a result of the lessons learnt after issuing QOS regulation for cable TV services in CAS notified areas, the authority felt it was appropriate to commence the consultation process for QOS to empower the consumers in non-CAS areas also." Its recommendations would help the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to extend the conditional access system in other parts of the country. It had already issued quality of service in the CAS notified areas of the four metros namely Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata in 2006.
