Three killed in suicide attack outside Pakistani stadium

Pakistan FlagIslamabad - At least three people were killed and half a dozen injured in a suicide attack at the gates of a packed sports stadium in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on Tuesday, officials said.

The blast occurred immediately after the conclusion of three-day inter-provincial games, District Coordination Officer Sahebzada Anees told reporters at the bombing cite.

"It was a suicide attack and so far we have received reports that three people died and seven are injured," Provincial Minister Miian Iftikhar Hussain said.

Apparently, the target of the attack was senior provincial minister Bashir Ahmed Bilour, whose was leaving the stadium when the bomber blew himself up.

"Mr Bilour is safe," said Hussain.

According to the officials, some 1200 players and officials while 25,000 to 30,000 spectators were present in Qayyum Sports Stadium. Among the killed was the husband of a female player. (dpa)
