Threats on Congress being investigated by FBI

Threats on Congress being investigated by FBIIt is investigating "threats and incidents directed against Members of Congress" following passage of U. S. healthcare reform legislation, the FBI said Wednesday.

Some House Democrats had been threatened in their home districts because of their healthcare votes, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said. Politico has reported that Hoyer called on Republican leaders to condemn the threats.

Hoyer told reporters, "I would hope that we would join together jointly and make it very clear that none of us condone this kind of activity. And when we see it, we speak out strongly in opposition to it. And I would hope that we would do that going forward."

More than 10 House Democrats reported incidents of threats or other forms of harassment following their votes Sunday in support of the divisive healthcare overhaul, Hoyer further said.

The agency was investigating, FBI spokeswoman Katherine Schweit said in a statement.

Schweit further added, "All threats and incidents directed against Members of Congress are taken seriously and are being investigated by the FBI, U. S. Capitol Police and other law enforcement agencies to identify and bring to justice those responsible."

A woman says in one message, "There are millions of people across the country, who, wish you ill, and all of those thoughts that are projected on you will materialize into something that's not very good for you."

It was further reported by NBC News that someone faxed a picture of a noose to Stupak's office and to the office of House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina.

Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio condemned threats but also explained why people were so riled.
