Ten dead in disco stampede amidst police raidMexico City  - Ten people were dead in a stampede Friday night in a discotheque in Mexico City after police raided the club.

Officials said the deaths occurred amidst a rush of panic among the 1,000 young people visiting the establishment after police started the raid.

Police chief Joel Ortega blamed the club's operators for provoking panic. The owner and 38 others were arrested, police said.

Eyewitnesses told local radio stations that the stampede started as people heard gunshots. They said that police blocked off the main exit, pushing back the terrified mob and trampling those who fell. The young people were celebrating the end of the school year.

Police charged the club with drug abuse and giving alcohol to minors. (dpa)
