Telecom commission to determine norms for new unified licences
The Telecom commission is scheduled to hold a meeting on Friday to determine the terms and conditions for issuing unified licenses to the telecom service providers that were selected through 2G-auctions.
The terms and conditions of the agreement will be clarified in detail to the firms that win spectrum in 2G-auctions, which is scheduled to begin later this month. The government has decided to issue unified licenses to the firms whose licenses were cancelled by the Supreme Court of India.
The Supreme Court of India has scrapped the validity of all 122 spectrum licenses in February that were granted to telecom firms during the former communications minister A Raja’s time in office. The court cancelled all the licenses on the ground they were issued in a “totally arbitrary and unconstitutional” manner.
Telecom secretary R Chandrashekhar has said that the Telecom commission will finalize all the recommendations for the aspects relating to unified licenses by Friday. He indicated that the commission will hold discussions on various aspects including service areas, eligibility conditions, entry fee, performance based guarantees (PBG), financial bank guarantees (FBG).
