Arjun Singh to launch National Mission on Education todayTirupati, Feb 3 : Union Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh will launch the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology here today.

D. Purandeswari, Minister of State for Higher Education will also grace the occasion.

Union Government had approved the Mission in the first week of last month.

The highlights of the components of the Mission will be exhibited during the launch ceremony.

February 3rd To See Rs 500 Laptop DisplayOn 3rd February, when the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology is launched; the people would also see a $10 laptop (Rs 500) prototype, with 2 GB RAM capacity, would be on display in Tirupati.  

The latest $10 laptop project has arrived as a response to the $100 laptop of MIT's Nicholas Negroponte, which he was trying to sell to India. This $10 laptop had been possible due to the efforts put in by students of Vellore Institute of Technology, scientists in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIT-Madras and involvement of PSUs like Semiconductor Complex.

7,600 couples marry at Andhra Pradesh’s famous Tirumala templeTirupati (Andhra Pradesh), Nov. 4 : About 7,600 couples tied the nuptial knot at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam Board of the famed Sri Venkateshwara Temple under the ‘Kalyanamasthu’ programme.

The Sri Venkateswara Temple, is popularly known as the Balaji Temple, and is one of the most frequented pilgrim centres by Hindus.

Of the 7600 weddings, 69 tied the nuptial knot at Tirupati.

Sonia lauds Andhra Pradesh government for women empowerment

Tirupati, Sep 11 : Congress president Sonia Gandhi today praised the Andhra Pradesh government for taking the lead in women’s empowerment in the country.

She said the performance of the state government to empower women was not only admired by the rest of the country but had also aroused curiosity abroad.

“During my visit to other countries, I am often asked by women leaders about the programmes taken up by the Andhra Pradesh government,” she said while interacting with members of self-help groups (SHGs) and women beneficiaries of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

Police conducted security checks and sounded a high alert in Kerala following the threats.

Reportedly, a television channel in Karnataka received an e-mail threatening that Kerala would be the next target of the terrorists.
