Recurrent profit, however, rose by 0.2 per cent, despite the global financial crisis.

The result was influenced by factors including early retirement payments at its Spanish operations valued at 602 million euros and losses caused by alleged Wall Street swindler Bernard Madoff valued at 302 million euros, BBVA said.

Two Italian mafia bosses arrested in Spain

Two Italian mafia bosses arrested in Spain Madrid  - Spanish police have detained two of the leaders of the Neapolitan Camorra criminal organization, police said Tuesday.

Antonio Caiazzo, a historical leader of the Camorra's Volmero clan, and his right-hand man Francesco Simeoli were held in Majadahonda near Madrid as they were leaving a restaurant by car on Monday evening.

The men, both of whom are 50 years old, did not resist arrest, police said.

Caiazzo went on the run in March 2007 after being sentenced to 12 years in prison by a Naples court.

UN meeting launches "alliance against hunger" Madrid  - A United Nations conference on Tuesday launched plans for a "global partnership" against hunger, with UN Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon urging donor countries to release more funds to guarantee food security despite the economic crisis.

"We must all do more," Ban said on closing the two-day meeting on food security in Madrid, hosted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Spain.

A 53-year-old man died at a Tarragona hospital on Monday after a wind gust pulled him down from his balcony on Saturday, hospital sources said.

The death toll thus climbed to 16 since Friday for the entire country.
