Allen StanfordNew York, Feb. 20 : Texan billionaire Sir Allen Stanford was in the process of launching an investment-related business in the United Kingdom when he was charged with committing an eight billion dollar fraud by US authorities.

Documents seen by The Daily Telegraph suggest that Stanford was preparing to open a UK base for his sprawling financial empire, which he purports spanned investors in more than 140 countries.

FBI agents tracked down Sir Allen in Virginia, whom US federal prosecutors are investigating for operating an alleged Ponzi scheme that defrauded investors around the globe.

Lindsey Van of the US is the first women's ski-jump world champion

Lindsey VanLiberec, Czech Republic - Lindsey Van of the United States made ski history on Friday when she won the first world title on offer in women's ski-jumping.

Placed fourth after the first round with 89 metres, Van, 24, soared the day's longest jump of 97m in the second round to win with 243.0 points.

First-round leader Ulrike Graessler of Germany placed second with 239.0 points from 93.5m and 94m. Third place went to Norwegian Anette Sagen with 238.5 points from 93.5m and 94m.

The 36 starters faced driving snowfall in their big-event debut. Women's ski-jumping was not recognized by the ruling body FIS until the late 1990s.
