Cairo  - Syria's ambassador to Egypt said Saturday it was widely expected that Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem would not attend the emergency Arab foreign ministers' meeting due to be held in Cairo Sunday to discuss the Lebanon crisis.

Ambassador Youssef Ahmed told the media that another Syrian delegate would represent the country if al-Muallem did not attend.

Sources told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that the Lebanese ambassador to Egypt and Lebanon's representative in the Arab League were most likely to represent their country.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia called Friday for an immediate Arab foreign ministers' meeting to help resolve the conflict in Beirut. (dpa)
