Surgery technologist accused of stealing powerful painkiller from hospital in Colorado
In Washington State, an investigation is on into the conduct of a surgery technologist who's accused of a powerful painkiller robbery from a Colorado hospital.
Court records have shown that the 28-year-old Rocky Allen has been thrown away from a number of hospitals in many states. In the past, he has worked at Northwest Hospital & Medical Center in Seattle.
The agencies said that the Washington State Department of Health, King County Public Health, and Northwest Hospital & Medical Center are presently in initial stages of trying to determine if any patients have been put at risk when Allen worked in Seattle.
On Friday, Allen pleaded not guilty in federal court in Colorado in relation with a syringe swapping incident that took place recently in January. Earlier this week, he got arrested and was charged after a federal grand jury indicted him. He is facing one count of tampering with a consumer product and one count of taking a controlled substance by cheating and trick.
Court documents suggested that Allen has stolen a syringe with the painkiller Fentanyl Citrate, a restricted substance, before a surgical procedure at a Colorado hospital last month, replacing it with a generic syringe. According to reports by KMGH-TV, Allen is suffering from a bloodborne pathogen.
There are a number of hospitals in Colorado and Arizona that have started providing free HIV and Hepatitis testing to thousands of their patients after they get to know about the accusations against Allen.
The Washington State Department of Health records showed that from September 17, 2001, to July 23, 2012, he was licensed as a surgical technologist in Washington State. A King County Public Health spokeswoman said that he worked at Northwest Hospital & Medical Center in Seattle for about three months.
