Study reveals Some Wild Birds choose Love over Food
If you think only humans do crazy things for love, then a new study will surely change your belief. Researchers from the University of Oxford have found that great tits give up access to food just to be with their lovers.
According to the researchers, they thought that the small song birds that were mating would break up if they will have greater access to food. They conducted a study and restricted access to food to one bird in the mating pair. The researchers found that the bird without access to a feeder chose to spend time with its partner. The study published in the journal Current Biology suggested that great tit’s foraging behavior influence by love.
Josh Firth, an Oxford zoologist lead researcher of the study, said, “The choice to stay close to their partner over accessing food demonstrates how an individual bird's decisions in the short term, which might appear sub-optimal, can actually be shaped around gaining the long-term benefits of maintaining their key relationships”.
During the study, the researchers found that when the bird pair could not use feeders, they chose to spend more time there. Some birds split up, but birds like great tits spend too much time at a feeder they couldn’t use just because their partners go there, Firth said.
According to the researchers, they also found that the committed love birds do go hungry. They cooperate and exploit a feature to eat some seed. The birds also help each other, the researcher said.
