Study classifies drinkers into different types

According to reports, researchers tried to observe different “types” of drinkers by studying the personality traits of college students after they had some drinks. Researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia conducted the study.

The study was conducted on 374 college students. All of them reported how they reacted before and after having a few drinks. According to the study, “Some people are known to get angry and violent, careless and irresponsible, or weepy and inconsolable when drinking, and that is often what earns them the label of being a ‘problem drinker”.

No experimental research has previously been conducted into the different types of personality-like changes, which are experienced by people after drinking.

A group of researchers, led by Rachel Winograd, who is a Ph.D student in clinical psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia, gathered data on the students regarding their behaviors after having a few drinks. It was found by them that the students could be classified into four main types.

Winograd told what people think about “good drunks or bad drunks”. He said that generally “a drunk personality” is a supposition that people change after they get drunk.

However, the researchers wanted to use scientific framework, while talking about different types of “drunk” personalities, in place of saying only “good or bad”. Therefore, they concentrated on conscientiousness, agreeableness, intellect and extraversion of each student after drinking.

Around 1.5% of students showed that drinking or use of drugs was related to a suicide attempt in the previous year.
