Serena Williams beats Jelena Jankovic to regain Number 1 Position

Serena Williams beats Jelena Jankovic to regain Number 1 PositionOn Sunday night, Serena Williams jumped with joy after ousting Jelena Jankovic with a straight-set win over 6-4, 7-5, in a thrilling match full of spectacular strokes and momentum swings. This was William’s third U.S. Open championship and ninth Grand Slam title.

In the final four games, Williams was simply inexorable managing a straight-set win over Jankovic.

This victory will give Williams the 1st place in the world rankings. Last year she braced that position was 2002. The win also means that U.S. will be in the lead in the rankings on Monday, for the first time since August 2003.
For the last one month Jankovic had held the first position and would have the position had she won a title match that was postponed from Saturday night because of Tropical Storm Hanna.
The match turned out to be quite interesting as both the players pushed the limits and tried things which did not exactly lie in their comfort zones.
Jankovic came out of her defense mode and attacked sometimes forcing Williams to display her own defensive speed.

But in the end Williams managed to penetrate Jankovic’s defensive wall and pound her way to victory.
