Samsung surpasses Apple to become global smartphone leader
South Korean electronics giant, Samsung has surpassed rival Apple to become the world’s leading top smartphone maker in the July-September period backed by a strong growth in shipments.
Samsung entered the smartphone market only last year and has largely aligned itself to Google’s Android platform. The company uses a sound production system that allows it to launch newer products with great speed in the market. Apple had launched the original version of its iPhone smartphone in 2007, starting a revolution.
Experts believe that the two companies will continue to dominate the forth quarter as there are no real rivals strong enough to challenge their positions. Samsung announced on Friday that its profits for the telecom division more than doubled from a year ago to 2.5 trillion won ($2.2 billion).
The telecom division of the electronics giant, which also produces televisions and other electronics appliances, accounted for 60 percent of the company’s total profit. The shipments from the company increased 44 percent to 27.8 million units, according to a report by research firm Strategy Analytics.
Samsung and Apple are locked in an elaborate legal battle over patents across the world in various countries. The American giant accuses Samsung of copying its phone smartphone and iPad tablet computer to create its Galaxy series of smartphones and tablets. Samsung's Galaxy devices are seen as among the biggest challengers to Apple's mobile products.
Samsung devices are based on Apple’s rival, Google’s Android system and some believe that Apple legal battle against Samsung and other manufacturers is actually targeted against Android itself.
