Rwandan president visits German jail to meet aide

President Paul KagameFrankfurt - Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who is on a private trip to Germany, visited the prison Tuesday where his senior aide Rose Kabuye is being held on suspicion of murder.

She was upbeat and ready to face French investigators, Kagame said after leaving the women's jail.

Kabuye was arrested Sunday as she arrived in Germany to prepare for Kagame's arrival the next day. He was invited to Germany by the Frankfurt Stock Exchange company and gave a lecture to German business people Monday evening. He did not meet German officials.

Rwanda has protested at her arrest, contending that she enjoys diplomatic immunity. But German Foreign Ministry officials say she arrived with an ordinary passport on a non-official visit.

She has been wanted in France for the past two years on suspicion that she had a role in the 1994 assassination of Hutu president Juvenal Habyarimana, which triggered genocidal violence by Hutu militants against the Tutsi ethnic group.

Kabuye, 47, is chief of the president's protocol department and a leading member of his Rwandan Patriotic Front. She was formerly mayor of the Rwandan capital Kigali.

German prosecutors say she has agreed to fast-track extradition to France, meaning her departure could come within days. (dpa)
