London  - Blackburn Rovers' hopes of avoiding relegation to the Championship suffered a major blow on Monday when midfielder Brett Emerton was ruled out for the season with a knee injury.

The Australia international suffered the injury during Saturday's goalless draw with Middlesbrough.

He has had surgery and will be out for six months. dpa
