Romanian centre-right party to take key economic portfolios

Romanian elections overshadowed by financial crisisBucharest- The Romanian centre-right Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L) is to take the key economic portfolios in the country's new cabinet, while coalition partner - the socialist PSD party - is to receive social portfolios, including the ministry for work, families and social security, party sources said Wednesday.

The new cabinet is currently being formed following elections on November 30, in which neither party achieved a decisive result. PD-L leader Emil Boc is to become prime minister, following the surprise rejection of the post by former prime minister Theodor Stolojan.

The country's justice ministry - relevant for an EU-prompted fight against corruption - is to be filled by a non-partisan individual, the parties said.

The ministries of finance, economy, transport, trade and information are to be filled by PD-L officials, as well as defence, culture, tourism and sport.

The PSD is to receive also portfolios for education and science, health, agriculture and regional development, as well as the interior and foreign ministry positions.

The PSD will also name a minister for relations between the government and parliament. One of the PSD's nominated deputy prime ministers should also coordinate a department for European affairs. (dpa)
