Researchers use Instagram to predict models' popularity in future

An advanced computation has been developed by researchers at Indiana University to identify new faces that could be successful in modeling world. This computation is reported to be more than 80% precise.

The researchers made use of data from Instagram and computational methods so as to come up with this technique. They collected data from hundreds of fashion models using a database of professional female fashion models in order to study information like hip, waist, height, dress and shoe size, runways walked, modeling agency and eye color. In order to determine how popular the models were, they took into consideration the number of runways they had walked.

As per Emilio Ferrara, a computer scientist at the University of Southern California who conducted the research at the IU Bloomington School of Informatics and Computing's Center for Complex Networks and Systems Research, their analysis shows that importance of Instagram is similar to being cast by a top modeling agency, when it comes to its ability to predict success in the field.

It has been found in the analysis that there is a general trend that a model who has an Instagram account with a high number of likes and comments is also successful on the runway.

According to Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia, a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Complex Networks and Systems Research who was related to the research, "Social media is changing the game dramatically. Traditionally, models don't interact with consumers; but now their online activity plays an important role in popularity and, ultimately, success".
