A well made 67 from Tanmay Srivastava facilitated Uttar Pradesh to reach 289 for eight in their second innings and virtually shut Gujarat out of the game on the penultimate day of the quarterfinal match.

At the end of the third day’s play, UP were 477 runs ahead with two second innings wickets in hand at Motibagh ground here.

Resuming at the overnight score of 76 for the loss of one wicket, young lad Suresh Raina fell victim to Parmar. Tanmay Srivastava (67runs, 149balls, 4 boundaries) played a patient knock but a doosra from Parmar saw the end of his courageous innings.

The family of the UP PWD engineer, killed by workers of the BSP for refusing to give donation for the Chief Minister Mayawati's birthday, refused the compensation from the government.

Manoj Gupta was beaten to death by the BSP MLA Shekhar Tiwari when he refused to give donation for Chief Minister Mayawati's birthday.

Tiwari was arrested for the killing and has been charged under the National Security Act (NSA) and Gangster Act. The post mortem report of the engineer showed two head injuries, wounds all over his body and fractures in one arm and both legs. Probe by CBI is being continuously demanded by the family of the victim despite Mayawati's refusal.

Meanwhile the political unrest over the killing continues.

Public Works Department (PWD) engineer M K Gupta was beaten to death in Auraiya for refusing to pay for chief minister Mayawati's birthday celebrations. The state administration has denied the allegation.

According to sources, BSP MLA and his supporters tortured Gupta after he refused to pay Rs 50 lakh for the birthday celebrations of Chief Minister Mayawati on January 15. Marks of torture and electric shocks were found on the body.

According to Auraiya Additional SP Sureshwar, Gupta was unconscious when Tiwari left him at the police station before dawn. Gupta was declared dead when police took him to hospital. SHO Hoshiar Singh was later suspended for negligence.

Chandausi (Uttar Pradesh), Dec. 17 : The reduced demand for mint and the processed menthol has badly affected the local farmers in Chandausi Tehsil of Uttar Pradesh's Moradabad District.

Farmers lament that the falling prices of mint and the processed menthol have made the local farmers to take to wheat cultivation instead of mint.

Many people here have long viewed Chandausi as literally the Menthol City. It is because this place has been a major contributor to the total world produce of menthol.

Ghaziabad (UP), Dec 11 : In the wake of the recent terror attacks in Mumbai, the police forces of Uttar Pradesh have decided to raise a team of 100 men from its existing team of constables to combat militant attacks.

The National Security Group (NSG) commandoes who emerged as the real heroes in the Mumbai terror strikes would help in training these constables.

Code-named as the Quick Reaction Team of Ghaziabad, they are begin their month long training from the last week of December.
