Migratory moths that hitch rides on wind are not drifters

Washington, October 14 : While migratory moths are known to hitch rides on the wind, a new study suggests that it would be wrong to brand them drifters.

Studies conducted in the past had shown that Silver Y moths rely on a sophisticated internal compass, sailing on favourable winds to reach their southerly winter destination within a matter of days.

The latest study has shown that the moths get back north, where they started from, in the spring by throwing that whole system in reverse.

Ousted Alaskan commissioner says Palin’s image damaged by ‘Trooper Gate’

Washington, Oct 14 : Former Alaska Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan has said that he feels relieved by a legislative report concluding that Governor Sarah Palin abused her authority by trying to have her former brother-in-law fired as a state police officer.

“I’ve never contested my firing. My firing was completely lawful. It wasn’t that I was fired that I asked any questions. It was, what were the reasons for the firing,” Monegan said in a nationally broadcast interview.

“I think that we’re more concerned about our Governor and I think she took a big blow to her credibility and more significantly to her promises of being open and transparent,” he said.

Like humans, animals too have personalities

Washington, Oct 14 : It''s not just humans who have personalities that distinguish them from their friends and family, for the animal kingdom too follows the same path, says a new research.

In the new study, Franz Weissing of the University of Groningen has used mathematical model to explain how and why such animal temperaments develop over time.

The model will also elucidate as to why certain individuals are more rigid or flexible than others, and why some change their behaviour in response to changes in their environment unlike others.

The bottomline, according to Weissing, is costs and benefits. His model shows that a group with both rigid and flexible personality types co-exist makes for an optimal system.
