Madagascar's deposed president Ravalomanana in Swaziland: report Johannesburg  - Madagascar's deposed president, Marc Ravalomanana, is in Swaziland after being forced from office, according to a Swazi newspaper report Tuesday.

The Swazi Observer newspaper, quoting the Foreign Ministry of the mountain kingdom that is landlocked with South Africa, reported that Ravalomanana had arrived the previous day on an undisclosed mission.

Swazi King Mswati III currently chairs the security organ of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), of which the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar is a member.

Around 5,000 people attended the rally in Antananarivo's May 13 square, the square where Rajoelina's supporters staged seven weeks of near-daily protests that eventually toppled ex-president Marc Ravalomanana last week.

Madagascar's Rajoelina is inaugurated as self-declared president Antananarivo  - Madagascar's new leader Andry Rajoelina was inaugurated as president Saturday at a stadium ceremony attended by some 50,000 cheering supporters in the capital, Antananarivo.

The ceremony, following seven weeks of violence which saw the ousting of elected president Marc Ravalomanana, came a day after the African Union suspended the country over Rajoelina's "coup".

US cuts off aid to MadagascarWashington  - The United States moved to cut off aid to Madagascar on Friday following the forced resignation of the Indian Ocean island's president that amounted to a "coup d'etat," the State Department said.

The president of Madagascar, Marc Ravalomanana, resigned on Tuesday under pressure from the military. He ceded control to mutinous generals, who in turn appointed opposition leader Andry Rajoelina as interim president.

The chairman of the AU Peace and Security Council, Bruno Nongoma Zidouemba, said that Rajoelina's army-backed arrival to power through the streets constituted a "civilian and military coup".

US reviewing relations with Madagascar

US reviewing relations with MadagascarWashington  - The United States was reviewing relations with Madagascar following the "undemocratic" transfer of power in the country, the US State Department said Thursday.

State Department spokesman Robert Wood said it was too early to say if the review would results in a cut-off of the millions of dollars in aid the United States provides annually to the troubled African nation.

"We've taken a close look at this. And we believe recent political developments in Madagascar constitute an undemocratic transfer of power," Wood said.
