Nairobi -Obama's grandmother under 24-hour guard after Kenya break-in Kenyan police have set up a 24-hour guard outside the home of US presidential candidate Barack Obama's grandmother after thieves targeted her home, reports said Friday.

Obama's grandmother Sarah, 86, said burglars broke in through her kitchen door in the western Kenyan village of Kogelo and attempted to steal a solar panel from her roof.

Local police chief Johnston Ipara told the Daily Nation that two tents had been set up outside Sarah Obama's home until a permanent police station was built nearby.

"I don't understand the motive of the thieves, since nothing was stolen from the kitchen," Sarah Obama told The Daily Nation.

German national held in Kenya in connection with animal smuggling

German national held in Kenya in connection with animal smuggling Nairobi  - A German national resident in Kenya is being held in connection with an attempt to illegally export live animals to Japan, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said Thursday.

The KWS said the unnamed German was arrested at midnight on a reptile farm in Eastern Kenya where he works as the director.

The man was arrested after KWS officials intercepted a consigment at Moi International Airport, Mombasa, late on Wednesday.

Kenya's exiled anti-corruption chief to return home

John GithongoNairobi - Kenya's former anti-corruption chief John Githongo returned home to speak at a public forum Wednesday three years after fleeing the East African nation amid fears for his life.

Githongo said he received threats after his investigation found that state contracts worth over one billion dollars were being awarded to fake companies in an affair that became known as the Anglo Leasing scandal.

Several senior government members resigned as a consequence of the investigation.
