Baghdad assures neighbours US troops will not assail them from Iraq Amman - Jordanian Prime Minister Nader Dahabi on Monday received a letter from his Iraqi counterpart Nuri al-Maliki assuring him that under the provisions of the security pact with Washington, US troops will not be allowed to use Iraqi territory to attack Jordan or any other neighbouring country, Iraqi Culture Minister Maher Hadithi said.

The Iraqi minister made the remarks to reporters after meeting with Dahabi to relay to him al-Maliki's message.

Lawmakers still divided one day before parliament discusses US pact Baghdad  - Two Iraqi lawmakers made a final call on fellow MPs Tuesday to vote for the US security pact that would allow US forces to remain another three years - while Sunni opponents threatened to boycott the vote.

Deputy Vice Prime Minister Barham Saleh and Rafea al-Eissawi held a joint press conference and called other lawmakers to put differences behind them and seek what they said was good for Iraq.

Two killed, four wounded in clashes with al-Qaeda suspects

IraqBaghdad - Two people were killed and another four wounded on Tuesday when clashes erupted between residents and armed men suspected of belonging to al-Qaeda, a police source said.

The clashes erupted between residents of the al-Ahrash district in the northern Sulaymaniyah province and gunmen. Town residents had accused the gunmen of kidnapping a local farmer.

Two of the wounded belonged to the Sunni tribal Awakening councils, also known as sons of Iraq, who collaborated with the US in fighting against al-Qaeda militias, the source said.

EU report ups the pressure to take in more Iraq refugees

Brussels - An internal European Union report on the state of Iraqi refugees in Jordan and Syria raises the pressure on the bloc to take in more of them ahead of a key ministerial meeting Thursday.

The report, seen by Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa, concludes that "there is a clear need for resettlement" of Iraqi refugees from the two countries, and that an "increased engagement on the part of the EU countries on resettlement could send a positive signal to the governments of the hosting countries."
