Head of Iraqi provincial council calls for elections postponement

Iraq MapBaghdad - The head of one of Iraq's most volatile provinces said the province's upcoming council elections should be postponed due to violence, local media reported on Tuesday.

Ibrahim Hassan Baglan, head of the Provincial Council in Diyala Province, called for a six-month delay due to the lack of security in the volatile province and the displacement of some 27,000 citizens in religious violence.

PKK announces ceasefire for Muslim Eid al-Adha festival Baghdad  - The Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) in Iraq announced a nine-day ceasefire with Turkey in honour of the Muslim Eid al-Adha festival, it was reported Monday.

"We want thereby to open the door to dialogue with Turkey," the news agency Aswat al-Iraq quoted PKK spokesman Ahmet Deniz as saying.

Deniz added that in the coming days PKK fighters would only resort to arms when attacked by Turkish troops.

Baquba mayor, 42 Iraqis injured in explosion Baghdad  - An explosive device went off in central Baquba on Sunday, leaving three people dead and 43 people injured, including the city's mayor, according to police sources.

The device, which was placed inside a shop in the market, targeted the mayor, who was touring the area with other officials. He was transferred to the US forces hospital in the northern city, police sources told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Iraq to negotiate UK over pullout timetableBaghdad  - Iraqi National Security Advisor Muwaffaq al- Rubaie said Sunday that his country will start negotiations with Britain on having an agreement for the withdrawal of British troops from the country.

"Iraq will start a series of negotiations with the British side to sign a deal on the withdrawal of British forces and the deal will be referred to parliament to pass it or turn it down," Rubaie told reporters during his visit to the holy Shiite city of Karbala.

He did not reveal when will the negations start, the Voices of Iraq news agency reported.

Bush praises US-Iraqi security agreement, advances in Iraq Washington  - US President George W Bush on Saturday said a US-Iraqi security pact approved by the Iraqi parliament this week shows how far US efforts in that country have come since the controversial 2003 invasion.

In his weekly radio address, Bush praised the so-called Status of Forces Agreement that authorizes US troops' presence after the UN mandate under which they are operating expires and also sets a timeline for US withdrawal from Iraq. Under the deal, US forces will leave Iraqi cities by the end of June 2009 and exit the country entirely by 2011.
