Six explosions rip through Baghdad; one killed, 27 injured

Iraq FlagBaghdad - A series of six explosions ripped through Baghdad Monday, killing one and injuring 27 amidst events surrounding the commemoration of Muslim holidays.

The fatality occurred after a roadside bomb planted near a playground in Baghdad's Zayouna area went off, killing one civilian and wounding six others.

Another five civilians were wounded in a car bomb explosion in southern Baghdad, a police source said.

"A car rigged with explosives went off in Abu Dashier region in southern Baghdad, injuring five civilians," the source told Voices of Iraq news agency.

He did not give further details.

Al-Maliki ends Tehran visit, asks for help rebuilding Iraq

Tehran - Iraq wants Iran's assistance in reconstructing the country, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said Sunday at the end of his two-day visit to Tehran.

"We are interested in availing ourselves of Iran's experience and expertise for Iraq's reconstruction and further want expansion of ties in all fields," the website of Iran's state television network IRIB quoted al-Maliki as saying.

The Iraq premier, on his fourth visit to Iran within the last two and a half years, said his talks with Iranian officials, including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, were positive and constructive and voiced optimism towards the future trend of relations with Iran.

Female suicide bomber kills 40 pilgrims in Baghdad

Baghdad - A suicide bomb blast on Sunday killed at least 40 people and wounded 79 in the Kadhimiya area of northern Baghdad, with most of the victims Iranian pilgrims, the Voices of Iraq news agency reported, citing a security source.

The agency said the attack was carried out by a female suicide bomber. The woman wearing an explosives belt blew herself up at a joint army-police checkpoint in the Kadhimiya area, the source told the agency.

According to the source, most of the casualties were Iranian pilgrims who were among the many foreigners who had come to commemorate the Shiite festival of Ashoura at the shrine of Imam Musa al-Kadhim, in the Baghdad district bearing his name.
