Srinagar, Sept 3 : Curfew following protests and shutdowns due to shrine land row over the past two months in Srinagar has caused a major setback to the economy of the region.
Though the curfew was relaxed at intervals in a phased manner, it was not enough for traders and businessmen to carry out their business.
The economy that was coming on track after 19-year turmoil is again in doldrums due to the land row.
The worst hit sectors are tourism, fruit, hosiery, carpets, handicrafts and dry fruits.
The region which ropes in major business during the season lost at least 80 per cent of its exports, especially fruits, due to the agitation and shutdowns over shrine row.
The Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Mr. Anbumani Ramadoss announced, on Tuesday, that private as well as public offices can no longer have separate rooms for smoking as the official prohibition on smoking in public places would be imposed rigorously from October 02.
On the sidelines of a function, Mr. Anbumani said, “From October 2, the government would introduce the no smoking policy in all indoor establishments.”

Berlin- The German Foreign Office said Tuesday it would provide aid of up to 500,000 euros (725,000 dollars) to flood victims in the Indian state of Bihar.
Up to 2.5 million people were in urgent need of emergency accommodation, food, drinking water and medical supplies, the ministry said.
It said the funds would be placed at the disposal of German aid organizations working in the area, making use of their longstanding experience of the conditions there.
New Delhi, Sep 2 : The Election Commission today decided to convene a meeting of political parties in New Delhi on September 8 to assess the situation in Jammu and Kashmir over the possibility of holding assembly polls in the wake of the recent violence in the State.
A decision to call leaders of seven national parties and three state parties was taken by the EC in view of the fact that Governor’s rule in the state ends on January 10 and the need to hold elections on time in case the government is keen on the conduct of the democratic exercise.
