Unexploded bomb found in southern Philippine city Iligan City, Philippines  - A second unexploded bomb was recovered in a southern Philippine city on Sunday, three days after twin explosions killed three people, police said.

The explosive, made from an 81-millimetre mortar shell, was found in a garbage dump in Iligan City, 810 kilometres south of Manila, police said.

It was the second unexploded bomb found in the city since two shopping centres were bombed on Thursday, killing three people and injured scores.

Philippine leader visits victims of twin bombings in the south Iligan City, Philippines  - President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Friday visited the people injured in two bombings in a southern Philippine city.

Press Secretary Jesus Dureza said Arroyo went to Iligan City in Lanao del Norte province, 855 kilometres south of Manila, and visited the hospital where 41 people wounded in the attacks were being treated.

Arroyo also visited the funeral home where two fatalities from the twin bombings were taken.

The bombings occurred 15 minutes apart shortly after lunch in the Jerry Shopping Center and Uni City mall in Iligan City in Lanao del Norte province, 855 kilometres south of Manila, Mayor Lawrence Cruz said.

Troops clash with Muslim rebels allegedly planning attack

Iligan City, Philippines  - Philippine troops clashed Monday with Muslim separatist rebels who were allegedly planning to attack towns in a southern province, an army commander said.

The firefight erupted in the town of Wao in Lanao del Sur province, 810 kilometres south of Manila, after intelligence reports warned of a possible attack by up to 200 Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels.

Colonel Nicanor Dolojan, an army brigade commander, said government troops launched "clearing operations" against MILF rebels who were "threatening to attack military installations and municipalities of Wao and nearby Bumbaran."

One soldier killed, eight wounded in southern Philippines Iligan City, Philippines - One soldier was killed and eight were wounded in an ambush by Muslim separatist rebels in the southern Philippines, an army spokesman said Thursday.

The soldiers were attacked Wednesday along a highway in Calanugas town in Lanao del Sur province, 810 kilometres south of Manila, Lieutenant Colonel Agane Adriatico said.

Adriatico, a regional army spokesman, said the soldiers were responding to intelligence reports that 100 Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels had occupied parts of the highway.

Philippine military overruns Muslim rebel camp Iligan City, Philippines - Philippine government troops Thursday overran a Muslim rebel camp in the country's troubled south as Air Force planes renewed airstrikes against guerrilla positions, military officials said.

Army Major General Nehemias Pajarito said soldiers captured the Moro Islamic Liberation Front's (MILF) Camp Bilal in Nunungan town in the province Lanao del Norte, 
810 kilometres south of Manila, after more than a week of intense fighting.
