Hong Kong airline cuts 10 flights a week to offset fuel price rise Hong Kong  - Hong Kong's flagship airline Cathay Pacific Tuesday announced it is cutting 10 flights a week to North America to offset soaring fuel costs.

The airline, which last week posted its first loss in five years, is cutting one of its daily flights to Los Angeles and reducing the number of weekly flights to Vancouver from 17 to 14 from next month.

The study by the University of Hong Kong concluded that 6.7 per cent of people in the wealthy high-rise city could be classified as compulsive shoppers and found 90 per cent of them had unpaid debts.

Assets of collapsed Hong Kong airline Oasis go on sale

Hong Kong  - The assets of Hong Kong budget airline Oasis, which collapsed in April, will go on sale Tuesday, the company organising the auction confirmed Monday.

The assets, divided into 50 lots, include aviation gear and spares and a virtual simulator used to train pilots alongside cabin furnishings such as cabinets, seats and head rests.

GoIndustry DoveBid, which specialises in the sale and valuation of assets, said the auction would begin Tuesday afternoon and close Thursday.

Investigation launched into fire which killed 4 in Hong KongHong Kong  - An investigation was underway in Hong Kong Monday following a fire in a 15-storey building which left four dead and at least 55 people injured.

The blaze - one of the worst in the city in the last decade - began in a karaoke nightclub on the mezzanine floor of the building early Sunday morning and spread upwards through the high-rise block of flats trapping dozens of residents.

Villagers claim ashes repository has bad feng shui

Hong Kong - Villagers from a hamlet in northern Hong Kong are fighting plans to build a repository for the cremated remains of people claiming the building still under construction has caused bad feng shui, a media report said Saturday.

The building containing the columbarium in Tsui Keng Lo Wai village is already half completed after being converted from several houses, the South China Morning Post said.

Speaking during a demonstration against the scheme on Friday, village representative Rico Yau said villagers plan to seek an injunction to stop the project.

One angry villager Chan Chin-fai said: "We bury our ancestors on the hillsides. How dare the developers put outsiders' niches in the middle of the village."

Protester ejected from Olympic equestrian venue

pro-Tibetan protesterHong Kong - A local pro-Tibetan protester was thrown out of the Olympics equestrian events soon after the start of the competition Saturday after she unfurled a Tibetan flag.

University student Christina Chan was ejected by police and security officers for breaking rules at the two equestrian venues that ban the display of the Tibetan flag, political slogans and commercial advertising.

Chan was seated in the front row at the start of the dressage competition that began around 6:30 am in the Sha Tin district of Hong Kong.
