Canada to send more troops to Afghanistan

AfghanistanKabul- Canada is to send more troops to Afghanistan in order to support fight against corruption, drug trafficking, good governance and reconstruct process, visiting Canadian Foreign Minister David Emerson said Saturday.

Speaking in a joint press conference with Afghan Foreign Minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta in Kabul, the Canadian minister however did not set a timetable for the sending of troops to Afghanistan but said, "Canada was asking other partners to increase their troops commitment. Canada has had 2,500 troops here in Afghanistan and that number could expand to 2,700."

17 Pak delegates denied visas to attend Quebec youth congressMontreal (Canada), July 26 : A seventeen member Pakistani delegation is among dozens of activists from developing countries who have been denied temporary visas into Canada, and thus will not the World Youth Congress being held in Quebec.

Organisers of the event said the activists failed to convince immigration officials that they would leave the country after the event ends.

The World Youth Congress runs from August 10 to August 21, reports the Globe and Mail.

US states, Canadian provinces to start emissions trading in 2012

San Francisco - Seven US West Coast states and four Canadian provinces are to introduce a market-based emissions-trading scheme aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions, news reports said Thursday.

The Western Climate Initiative - comprised of the US states of California, Arizona, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Oregon and Washington and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec - released a draft proposal for the programme Wednesday, the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper said.

Trading was to officially start in 2012.

The initiative was launched in February 2007 with the aim of dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions on a regional level by 15 per cent from 2005 levels by 2020.
