Five dead, 26 injured as car bomb explodes in Colombia Bogota  - Five people died and 26 others were injured Monday when a car bomb exploded in the south-western Colombian city of Cali, officials confirmed.

Four people were killed on the spot, while another died later in hospital following the blast in front of the city's central court building, said Interior and Justice Minister Fabio Valencia.

The dead included three homeless people, a taxi driver and a female bystander.

About 80 kilogrammes of explosives were used in the blast.

Teacher, students seek Guinness record after 74-hour science lesson

Bogota  - A teacher and 120 students at a school in northern Colombia, who endured a 74-hour science lesson to raise funds for charity, want their feat to appear in the Guinness Book of Records.

The chemistry and natural science lesson started on Friday, August 8, and ended the following Monday, at the Alfonso Lopez Pumarejo school in Turbaco, in the province of Bolivar, the Bogota daily El Tiempo reported Wednesday.

The students managed to raise about 2,660 dollars for the Fundevida Foundation, which treats 70 children suffering from cancer.

In keeping with Guinness rules, the students could rest for five minutes per hour. But they opted to take longer breaks after 4-6 hours of continuous studying.

The bomb was set off by alleged members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) late Thursday in the town's main square, said Luis Alfredo Ramos, governor of the north-western Colombian province of Antioquia.

The square was full of people attending a party there at the time.

Senator Carlos Garcia, who leads the National Unity Party, was taken into custody by police in the northern city of Santa Marta on a warrant from the supreme court in Bogota.

"I am completely innocent," he told reporters.

Three former members of the since disbanded United Self-Defence Forces of Colombia (AUC) said Garcia met with AUC leaders in 2001.
