Female suicide bomber kills 35, mainly Iranians, in Baghdad

Baghdad - A suicide bomb blast on Sunday killed 35 people and wounded 65 in the al-Kadhemiya area of northern Baghdad, with most of the victims Iranian pilgrims, the Voices of Iraq news agency reported, citing a security source.

The agency said the attack was carried out by a female suicide bomber. The woman wearing an explosives belt blew herself up at a joint army-police checkpoint in the al-Kadhemiya area, the source told the agency.

According to the source, most of the casualties were Iranian pilgrims who were among the many foreigners who had come to commemorate the Shia holy day of Ashoura.

The 10-day ritual aims at mourning the martyrdom of Imam Hussein Ibn Ali at the battle of Karbala.

Suicide bomber kills 23, injures 42 at Iraqi conference

Baghdad - A suicide bomber blew himself up at a national reconciliation conference in Iraq Friday, killing at least 23 people and wounding another 42 south of Baghdad, security sources said.

The bomber was a wanted man, identified as Mohamed al-Karghuli. He smuggled himself into a national reconciliation conference in a sheikh's house in al-Yussifiyah, General Qassem Attah told the Voices of Iraq (VOI) news agency.

In Hillah, unknown gunmen killed two tribal policemen and injured another four in an attack on a check point, the Voices of Iraq (VOI) news agency reported.

Tribal police also known as Awakening Councils are composed of Sunni tribe members collaborating with US forces to fight al-Qaeda terrorist network in Iraq.

Six killed, four injured in separate attacks in Iraq

Baghdad - Six people were killed and another four were injured on Thursday in separate attacks in Iraq, police sources said.

A bomb hidden in a truck went off in a garage in Mosul, killing three policemen and injuring another one, the Voices of Iraq (VOI) news agency reported. Mosul is located some 400 kilometres north of Baghdad.

In the northern province of Kirkuk, three gunmen were killed in clashes with Iraqi security forces. One of the gunmen belonged to the al-Qaeda network, Sarhad Qader, the chief of local police, told VOI.

Kirkuk is a multi-ethnic province located 250 kilometres north of Baghdad.

ROUNDUP: Iraq signs troop withdrawal deals with Britain, Australia

Baghdad  - The Iraqi Defence Ministry signed on Wednesday two agreements for the withdrawal of British and Australian troops from Iraq in 2009, a ministry spokesman said.

The agreements came hours before the expiration of the United Nations Security Council mandate governing the presence of foreign troops in the country. Under the agreements British and Australian troops will leave Iraq by July 2009.

Currently some 4,100 British troops and 1,000 Australian troops are stationed in Iraq.

Iraq and US had signed a security agreement in November covering the withdrawal of all US troops by mid-2010.

Meanwhile at least 11 people were killed in further separate incidents of violence around the country on Wednesday.
