London - Britain's most senior military commander in Afghanistan has put a damper on hopes for victory in the fight against the radical Islamist Taliban.

The public should not expect a "decisive military victory," Brigadier Mark Carleton-Smith said in an interview with the Sunday Times.

Although his troops had "taken the sting out" of the Taliban for 2008, "We will not win this war," he said. It had become necessary to "lower expectations," Carleton-Smith added.

Kabul- A suicide bomber attacked a convoy of Afghan army forces in western Afghanistan, killing himself and wounding a soldier and three civilians, while a suspected senior Taliban commander was arrested by NATO forces in the southern region, officials said Sunday.

The bomber rammed his explosive-laden motorbike into a convoy of Afghan national army forces in Guzara district of western Herat province on Sunday afternoon, said, Abdul Raouf Ahmadi, spokesman for police in western region.

He said the bomber died in the blast, while one soldier and three civilian passers-by were wounded.

London, Oct 5 : The international human rights body, Amnesty International (AI) has reportedly appealed to the governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan and the US-led NATO security forces operating in Afghanistan to provide safe passage and rehabilitation to the people displaced due to the ongoing shelling and air strikes on tribal areas along the Pak-Afghan border.

It called for immediate assistance to all such displaced people.

Washington, Oct 5 : On several occasions over the past four years, Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s brother Ahmed Wali Karzai has been found involved in drugs trade, but no action has been taken against him yet. Even US’ requests have proved to have fallen on deaf ears of the Afghan President, said a detailed report in New York Times.

Even the President rubbished the reports saying that they were substantiated with any concrete proof.

Kabul - US-led coalition forces killed five Taliban militants in southern and eastern Afghanistan in two separate operations, the military said Saturday.

The joint forces were conducting a search operation targeting a Taliban sub-commander in Andar district of southern Ghazni province on Friday when they encountered two armed militants, the US military said in a statement.

The soldiers killed the militants and recovered multiple AK-47 rifles, and materials used for making roadside bombs from the targeted compound, the statement.
