Reddit takes steps to end Online Harassment

Social networking and news website, Reddit, has received numerous complaints about online harassment of its users. In addition, the recent surveys have suggested that the website’s popularity is continuously declining due to the issue. Now, the company has added some new policies that according to the company will help in reining harassment of users by other users.

Administrators, who have been managing the website, announced on Thursday in a blog post that online harassment was becoming an issue and they are not in mood to tolerate harassment of users on their website.

Earlier, some of the users of the meme-trading site claimed that the platform is not enough secure to freely express their ideas or get engaged into conversation. The administrators noted that people have preferred to maintain a distance from the online platform and a survey confirmed that popularity among the users about the website has been declining.

In the blog post, they said, “The number one reason Redditors do not recommend the site – even though they use it themselves – is because they want to avoid exposing friends to hate and offensive content”.

In 2012, the website took some strict actions to protect its users. That time, the platform announced to ban child pornography. The decision was taken after a CNN report and just two months ago it prohibited its users from posting compromising pictures of other individuals without their consent.

According to Reddit’s administrators, the vast forum site contains open policies, which were made to allow users to freely expression their ideas. Some users had been using the policies in a wrong manner. Due to some users, other users have been discouraged to share their ideas freely because they fear for their and family safety.

Reddit’s administrators said that the website’s new rule will not stop users from expressing their general ideas, but stop the harassment of specific users.
