Police monitored WhatsApp and BBM on spot fixing case
It has been revealed that the police officials were monitoring messaging software like Whatsapp and Blackberry Messenger in the scot fixing case that led to the arrests of former Indian pace bowler S Sreesanth along with two of his Rajasthan Royals teammates.
According to a new media report, the Delhi police had around 70 phones under surveillance during their investigations into spot fixing in the IPL. The police said that they found that Sreesanth and the two others were involved in the scandal during their investigations in the spot fixing case. The players were coordinating the fixing arrangements on these arrangements.
Experts said that there is a general perception that Whatsapp and Blackberry Messenger services are more secure than SMS and were thus used for communicating for spot fixing. The services are more difficult to track but the authorities have access to these services. The messages sent on these services are encrypted and exists outside mobile service provider.
WhatsApp uses a person's mobile phone number as user ID unlike BlackBerry Messenger which relies on a unique PIN for ID. Indian security agencies have been working to put in pace effective mechanisms to monitor messaging on these services.
