Poland to meet on missile shield, boosting relations with Russia
Warsaw - Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk will meet with US, German and Ukrainian leaders in Munich for talks on improving relations with Russia and a proposed US anti-missile shield on Polish soil, the Polish Press Agency PAP reported on Friday.
Tusk will meet privately on Saturday with Ukrainian counterpart Yulia Tymoshenko, US vice-president Joe Biden and German chancellor Angela Merkel during an annual security conference. The talks will cover the missile shield, and boosting NATO and European Union relations with Russia, PAP reported.
"We will want to influence the betterment of relations between NATO, the EU and Russia - my government is taking the right steps in this direction," Tusk said. "But we also want NATO to have a strategy that will guarantee safety for each of its member states."
Tusk's meeting with Biden will be the first meeting between Polish and US leaders since the US elections, PAP reported.
Poland signed a deal with the US in August to place anti-missile shields on its territory in exchange for a pledge of military aid.
The US says the shield is meant for protection against Iran, but Moscow claims the system is aimed at its nuclear arsenal.
US President Barack Obama has said he supports the missile shield, if the technology can be shown effective. (dpa)
