PM admits draught in 141 districts
The government has finally admitted for the first time that there is a draught like situation in the country due to poor monsoon, which can impact country's food security.
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, addressing a high level meeting of the State Chief Secretaries on agriculture and food in the capital, said that 141 districts of the country are under draught like conditions that can further push prices of essential commodities due to decline in area under paddy.
Dr. Singh assured every type of support to states and asked State Chief Secretaries to quickly prepare details of loss to get assistance under the Calamity Relief Fund or the National Calamity Contingency Fund.
Dr. Singh said that some states failed to use funds under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna and the Food Security Mission, aimed to increase food production in the country.
The PM, however, observed that country has adequate food stock and no countryman will go hungry. He observed, "We are helped by the fact that there were adequate food stocks owing to record production and procurement of food grains in 2007-08 and 2008-09."
