Philips To Enter Indian Mobile Segment Again
Once again, Royal Philips has decided to make entry into the Indian mobile phone market by introducing a variety of accessories later this month.
The Dutch electronics brand eyes a big portion in India, the world’s fastest-growing mobile phone market, a year after selling its mobile business to China Electronics Corporation.
Alexander Bakkeren, VP and category leader for the mobility segment in Philips Consumer Lifestyle said that Philips has signed a contract with Nokia in order to make accessories that will support Nokia’s music-enabled mobile phones.
The company is focusing on the $100 million accessories market in India and hopes to garner a larger share of the market.
Mr. Bakkeren said, “Nokia is by far the market leader in the handset market in India, and hence the decision to enter into an agreement.”
He also said that the company (Philips) is also making further discussions with Nokia for bundling up its products with its cell phones.
“This allows huge opportunity brand like Philips to get an initial advantage in a mobile telecom market that is ready to explode in the next 2-3 years,” he said.
Nils Leseberg, senior director for strategy and alliances at Philips Consumer Lifestyle said that Philips would also launch accessories to Apple iPods in addition to mobile accessories.
“On an average, every iPod user buys at least two accessories and spending nearly $70 per accessory, presenting a company like us with interesting margins in the business,” Nils added.
The company is also planning to launch iPhone accessories, and is making discussions with both Apple and network providers to introduce iPhone in Germany, France and the UK for this purpose.
