Palin Reacts To The $150,000 ‘Clothing’ Episode

Five days after the brouhaha over financial disclosure forms from the Republican National Committee revealing a spending of $150,000 on clothing of Sarah Palin and her family, the vice presidential candidate tossed the blame back to the RNC.

Opening her remarks in Tampa, Palin, who had offered no comments till now, revived the unpleasant topic for the McCain campaign, saying that the whole wardrobe talk was very “ridiculous.”

Reacting to some Republican remarks that the purchases were embarrassing and excessive, Palin said: “Those clothes, they are not my property, just like the lighting and the staging and everything else that the RNC purchased. I’m not taking them with me. I’m back to wearing my own clothes from my favorite consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska.”

About the news of the expensive outfits - from upscale stores such as Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue – which offered a stark contrast to Palin’s image as an average “hockey mom”, Palin argued that she and her family live economically.

To emphasize her frugal tastes, said that she was wearing beaded earrings handmade by her mother-in-law; a $35 wedding ring from Hawaii that she had bought herself; and a flag pin, which she wears in honor of her son Track, who is stationed in Iraq.

Senator John McCain, Palin’s running mate, in an appearance Sunday on “Meet the Press” on NBC, was asked to comment on the controversy. McCain said: “Look, she lives a frugal life. She and her family are not wealthy. She and her family were thrust into this, and there was some - and some third of that money is given back. The rest will be donated to charity.”
