Islamabad, Dec. 12 : Pakistan is carrying out its own investigation into last month's terrorist attacks in Mumbai, President Asif Ali Zardari said on Thursday.

"The government is undertaking its own investigation of the incident and taking appropriate measures," an official statement quoted Zardari as telling visiting US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte in a meeting at the President's House.

Sources in the government and among diplomats told the Daily Times that Negroponte - who also met the prime minister, the foreign minister, the army chief and the economic adviser - told the Pakistani leaders to `do more' in response to Indian allegations of the involvement of Pakistani elements in the attacks.

Negroponte, who has arrived in India after completing visit to Pakistan, is believed to have told the leadership there that he wanted tangible actions so that he could cool down the tempers in India.

"Pakistani law enforcement agencies' countrywide crackdown against Jamaatud Dawa coincided with the arrival of the senior US official," the sources said, adding Pakistani leaders tried to convince Negroponte that Pakistan was already doing everything it could to dismantle terrorists networks.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told Negroponte in a separate meeting on Thursday that Pakistan would comply with a United Nations Security Council decision to put Lashkar-e-Toiba founder Hafiz Muhammad Saeed and the Jamaatud Dawa charity he now heads on the terrorists list.

Negroponte said his country would support Pakistan's efforts for defusing tensions with India. (ANI)
