Nurses blame hospital authorities for death of their colleague
Few nurses at the NRS Medical College and Hospital protested against the hospital authorities. The nurses claim that staff nurse Kaveri Bhowmik died due to negligence of the hospital authorities.
Death certificate of Staff Nurse Kaveri Bhowmik says that she had suffered a stroke but fellow nurses claim she showed the symptoms of dengue or encephalitis. They also say that she was not given proper treatment, not even given a bed and was also not given proper attention by the head of the nursing staff.
Nurse Parvati, convener of the Forum for Safety and Security of Nurses said: “Her platelet count was below normal. She was running temperature, vomiting blood and had convulsions. These are symptoms of dengue or encephalitis. But she was not administered treatment for these diseases.”
The nurses have also demanded compensation for the victim’s family. Her sister Sraboni Sarkar alleged that Bhowmik’s death had led her family to penury. The nurses have also demanded a job for the deceased’s brother to support the family.
Medical Superintendent L K Ghosh has agreed to conduct an inquiry and accepted the petition to reserve 10 beds in the hospital for its staff. “I have forwarded the petition to the Director of Medical Enquiry (DME).”
