Nokia might offer Pelican’s super cameras on Lumia smartphones

Nokia might offer Pelican’s super cameras on Lumia smartphonesHandset maker, Nokia has said that it might offer the impressive Pelican Imaging's 16-lens super cameras in the next generation of its popular Lumia smartphones.

Jo Harlow, Nokia's executive vice-president for smartphone business indicated that the company is aiming to offer computational or light-field photography for the next generation of its smartphones that are powered by Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. The company has not officially announced its plans to Pelican Imaging's multi-lens camera technology but many believe that the Nokia is working to offer super cams from the company on its devices.

"If you look at where imaging is going, computational imaging is an area of exploration. Being able to capture even more data -- data you cannot even see with the human eye that you can only see by actually going back to the picture and being able to do things with them," she said.

Pelican's technology includes 16 mini lenses that are arranged in four rows of four. Each of the lens captures one of the colours, red, blue or green that make the picture. When all of these single colour pictures are integrated, it eliminates noise as individual colours can be easily filtered out to create better quality pictures.

Pelican has been developing its technology and hopes that the smartphone makers would integrate tis technology in devices. A deal with Nokia would be a great boost for the company's efforts in the photography area.
